About
The name Shelter Rock is the name given to a massive boulder which was dislodged from the Magaliesberg cliff face about 10 000 years ago. It can be seen from many kilometres away when walking the Shelter Rock Hiking Trail.
Shelter Rock Hiking Trail follows ancient footpaths. At Shelter Rock Hiking Trail you can escape to the Magaliesberg where you can experience the healing power of nature while taking part in our activities or enjoy your function.
The views from the summit of the Magaliesberg is spectacular and you can relax and meditate at the spire garden on top of the mountain or anywhere in a secluded spot along the hiking trail.
Shelter Rock is within easy reach of Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria and Rustenburg.
It is a small owner run establishment and can easily adapt activities and events to the requirements of customers.s and cattle trails through a kloof created by an elephant footpath. Past the ruins of an Iron Age Village and a cairn of stones where local peoples used to place a rock to ensure a safe journey.

Shelter Rock Hiking Trailis not only for hikers! They cater for school groups, scout groups etc. up to 150 people. Abseiling is available on the farm as well. Pet Friendly Day Hike. There is an option of sleeping over at the campsite, bring your own tent. Great ablution facilities. No electricity. The campsite can accommodate 20.

- This is a journey through nature, human history and the geology of the Magaliesberg – from ancient times to the present.
- The hike is fun and promotes family bonding.
- You can train and test clothing for longer hikes eg Kili.
- The invigorating 8 km hike in the mountain air will stimulate your blood circulation.
- If you start early in the morning you will have enough time after completing the trail for social and other commitments.
- Your journey starts at Shelter Rock Base Camp where you park your car and register at reception.
- The mountain trail winds 8 km, on the southern slopes of the Magaliesberg rising 400 meters, to the top of the mountain and down again.
- A variety of birds, game and indigenous trees may be seen along the way.
- You walk past a 1000-year-old wild olive tree, an iron age village at The Shelter Rock.
- On the top of the mountain, you visit two Boer War Forts, a sandstone rock garden with weathered balancing rocks and a collection of spires built by fellow hikers during the years.
- On a clear day, you may see the kloof of Groenkloof, the hills at Sun City, Madibeng, The Hartebeestpoort dam, Sandton and Randburg, the Johannesburg General Hospital, the Witwatersberg and the West Rand.
- Anyone in good health and reasonable fitness can handle the hiking trail.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing and closed shoes (tennis shoes, hiking boots etc.; no sandals).
- Use lots of sunblock. Bear in mind that it becomes exceptionally hot on the Magaliesberg.
- Bring along your own refreshments and bottled water (1.5 litres).
- Remember to bring your camera to capture the views.
