About

On the Port St. Johns to Coffee Bay Hike we start the hiking trail at Port St. Johns to Coffee Bay, which is some of the most beautiful landscape in South Africa along the coastline of the former Transkei Homeland, where you will find unspoiled nature at it’s best. We walk along rolling grassy hills where you will spot colourful huts, coastal forests and cliffs flanked with the most beautiful sea views.

You will overnight in hiker’s huts and local village accommodation, where you will learn some Xhosa Language and be treated on Local Xhosa food.

Depending on the time of the year you may see dolphins and whales

The hiking trip is 5 days and 4 overnight stops and is guided, dinner, bed and breakfast included.

Trails

Day 1:

Port St Johns to Madakeni
Distance: +- 12km
Walking time: +- 5 hours
Terrain: Hilly at the start. Flattens out in the afternoon section
Highlights: Wildlife at Silaka Nature Reserve • Panoramic views of Sicambeni
The hike starts at Second Beach in Port St. Johns and heading towards Sugarloaf Rock. The trail then vents slightly inland towards Sicambeni. We stop for lunch at the Umngazi River Mouth. After lunch, the trail follows the coast.
Stopping at a beach for a swim, you reach the Mngazana River in the afternoon.

Day 2:

Madakeni to Tsweleni
Distance: +-12km
Walking time: +- 6 hours
Terrain: Hilly
Highlights: View from Brazen Head • Approach to Tsweleni in its coastal village setting
The hike leaves early in the morning from Madakeni Village and travel indigenous forest towards Brazen Head. We stop for lunch at the village of Mpande. Then swim at Sinangwana Beach after which we will be heading to Tsweleni Village.
You can rest or explore the beach.

Day 3:

Tsweleni to Hluleka
Distance: +- 14km
Walking time: +– 6 hours
Terrain: Rolling hills and flat beaches
Highlights: Mpande Rock Pools • Shark’s Point • Mnenu River • Game in Hluleka Nature Reserve
The hike goes through the undulating hills of Ginqi to the Mnenu river. Then the hike continues to Hluleka Nature Reserve.

Day 4:

Hluleka to Tshani Village
Distance: +- 18km
Walking time: +– 6 hours
Terrain: Rolling hills
Highlights: River trip • Walk to Tshani village
After breakfast, we hiking to Mamaolweni and then to Tshani.

Day 5:

Tshani Village to Coffee Bay
Distance: +- 14km
Walking time: +– 5 hours
Terrain: Flat
Highlights: Mdumbi and Mthatha Rivers • Reach over Maphuzi Cliffs into Coffee Bay
From Tshani Village we hike to Mdumbi River. We cross the river by ferry and enjoy a morning swim on Mdumbi Beach. We then head to the Mthatha River and another Ferry Crossing. The trail goes towards Maphuzi, over the cliffs. The Hike ends in Coffee Bay.

Accommodation

The accommodation can be considered as up-market for hikers with bedding etc supplied. Just bring your food and drink. An old farmhouse is also available.
