Sediba Hiking Trail

Our motto: Hike more, worry less…

About

Located near Memel, a tranquil village in the corner of the North Eastern Free State.

Approximately 240km from Jhb, 47km from Newcastle and 60km from Vrede.

The name Sediba means “fountain water” and gives a good indication of what can be expected on the trail. The grasslands and Seekoeivlei Wetlands are host to an estimated 350 bird species (230 species already recorded of which 15 are Red Data Species)

The green rolling hills, numerous picturesque mountain streams and weathered rock krans make the area around Memel interesting for the hiker. Sediba Hiking Trail has been well laid out to take full advantage of this beautiful area of the Eastern Free State. The two day trails are well constructed and well suited for the novice and hiker who are unsure of their fitness level. The accommodation is superb in the context of what hikers are normally used too and the kitchen facilities well above the average.

The Sediba Base Camp offers a breath-taking view and consists of three thatch roof chalets nestled in the mountains and accommodates up to 34 hikers. It is beautifully laid out and really ideal for relaxation. The camp has a lounge with a kitchen area with fridge, stove, pots and pans and a sink. The lounge has lovely handmade furniture with lounge chairs and tables.

There are 5 flush toilets and showers with hot water, which is provided by a “donkey”.

Trails

Day 1

The main trail (Khwela Trail) is 10.5km long and has an interesting variety of scenery to walk through. The dominant tree species is the Ou Hout.

The rocky terrain is negotiated with the help of several ladders and numerous bridges. A lot of work has gone into the trail to make sure it is safe for hikers. Along the trail there are some beautiful streams and rock pools to cool off in.

There are also some lovely waterfalls in the kloofs.

Day 2

The second day of the trail (Ou Hout Trail) is 6km long and is a relatively easy walk. The trail also takes in all the different aspects of the environment and it is well worth taking it at a slow pace to savour the beauty of the area.

The Sediba Hiking Trail is well worth a visit and once you have visited it, it is sure to become a favourite. It is important to take your time with your walk though, as the trails are not difficult and are relatively short but offer something very special that will be remembered for some time to come
